Brutal 2009 World Tournament Arena
For those who are familiar with World of Warcraft you've probably heard about the 2009 Arena Tournament. This is an annual event that has been going on for several years and now is just what it sounds … a tournament for Player versus Player in WoW Arena. I've never been much of a guy Arena but this year my curiosity got the better of me. I mean if I could make real things (up to $ 200,000 in cash and prizes), playing a damn game worth the entry fee? It would be a heck of a good story. I dropped $ 20 and went to see what this was all about.
Here are the basics. You get to make up to three level 80 characters per account. You have access to the entire top team. There are two, three and five man arena configurations. There is a way to practice against other players called "skirmish." So the first 10 or 20 minutes you spend preparing your guy. I rolled a druid Night Elf Balance and had lots of fun assembling this type. You get to use whatever you want including jewelry, spells, glyphs, the tree regular talents, trinkets, armor and high-end weapons and all that. Once again, it's all "free" in the game and not really worry about gold. Everyone has equal access to all the things to make this really comes down to a test of skill rather than who has the better team. Playing field.
A man called WoW friends on Skype and we throw in a few skirmish games. His favorite is a survival hunter and built a reality: a. Survival Hunter + Moonkin is usually a pretty devastating combination in the fields of battle, so I figured I'd rock and roll. The first matches were pretty easy and our "strategy" was to jump and beat the first person who could get our hands on. We have won seven of eight games in practice. Holy crap we're going to win it all! We aim to match tail Rated Arena (which has) and we were.
Our first ranked match was a bit of a starter eye. As you can rebuild the gates went up, I ran into the arena and then fell dead immediately. My partner was able to get a few shots before die. The total time in the area? Approximately 43 seconds. Hmmm.
Second game started lurking in Cat Form and sent my friend in front at the point. Both of our enemies were invisible from the beginning. One is exposed to stun and stab the heck out of my friend and I soon came to issue a priest and a druid very soon. Before he could heal off I was closed stunning, I appeared my trinket, stun and quickly blocked again hacked to death. Total time? About 43 seconds.
Long story short. We lost the first 7 games before winning the 8, 9 and 10. Professional Arena matches are difficult. Very hard. They are super fast and brutal bad. Timing is everything and burst damage is king. Is it frustrating? Hell yeah. Did he rip hair? Yes I'll be practicing for next week? Like you would not believe! Give it a try!
