How did the poodle end up on the skirts of girls in the ’50′s?

I am curious as to how the poodle, of all things, became a popular applique on tweed woolen skirts during the rock n’ roll era. I’m helping my dance studio to put on a production of Bye Bye Birdie so now would be a good time to start thinking about costumes, and I’ve just always wondered! Please help me out! :)
Thank you evon stark! That was the answer I was looking for!
Very much appreciated!! :)
If I could I’d make it the Best Answer but I don’t know how! I may not have enough points to do that… ?

the fluffy pommed poodle was the classic type of dog for a lady to own in those days and it was a symbol of innocence and affluence…poodles were used as a companionable accessory to many women..and still are actually. They represent fun and frivolity…I had a poodle skirt when I was a girl…it was a must have !!!
