Are the 7th chords commonly used in Pop Music?
According to a music theory book I have begun reading, they are not very used comparatively to triads. Since I am new to the music theory, I want to focus on the most common chords used in Pop Music.
That’s true, because triads are often used within the diatonic scales, and the diatonic is more likely to utilize major, diminished, and augmented triads. However, pop music is predominantly based upon pentatonic scales, and therefore utilize minor and 7th chords to a larger degree.
Regarding chords most commonly used in pop music, learn ALL your major, minor, 5th, 7th, minor 7th, & 9th chords, and that will be a good START. (and I mean open AND barre… in each position). So that’s about 120 chords to start with. Get crackin!!!!!
edit: Ok, I’ll go a little easier on you: Learn ABCDEFG Major, Minor, 7th, Minor 7th. 1 open and 1 barre each. That’s only 56 chords… and you’ll be ready to ROCK
