ARTISTS NIGERIA go on strike

Following the resolutions adopted at a world conference in Lagos recent news, the coalition of the main associations of the Nigerian music industry began a mass hunger strike indefinitely on 25 August.

The aim of the strike is to draw world attention to the amount intolerable piracy currently devastating the music industry in Nigeria. This drew musicians and other industry stakeholders to headquarters of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, for a public awareness meeting where various artists and music producers took the stage to express their anger and discontent against piracy. Those who spoke include, Tony Okoroji, Kenny Ogunbge of kennis music, Sunny Nneji, among others.

The coalition in its statement release signed by Mr. Efe Omorogbe before the start of the mass hunger strike, also decided that a delegation of business operators will proceed to the Assembly National Abuja on 01 September to express the disappointment of the industry, the lukewarm and ineffective government to tackle the scourge of piracy, which is fast eating away the life of Nigerians and destroy the image of the nation.

The coalition also is asking all organizations broadcasting in the country to show solidarity with the plight of Nigeria's entertainment industry by looking at September 1, 2009, as "A day without music. "To this end, the broadcasting stations across Nigeria, therefore asked not to play music between the hours of 6 am to 6 pm on 1 September. Artists from around the country were also asked not to engage in any musical performance on the above date.

It is noteworthy that groups is similar, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Nigeria Association of Theatre-Arts Professionals (ANTP), Nigeria movie producers and even government agencies, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) are part of the fight against piracy in Nigeria.

Despite doubts about the effectiveness of a mass hunger strike, Nigerians confidence! I fully appreciate the efforts of these associations by going to the point that starve themselves of food and even take the fight to the lair of pirates has statistics of the naira value of about six million pirated works destroyed by the NFVCB, I think more efforts should be directed to reorient Nigerians on the ills of piracy and its final result, because what goes around, comes all year.

Government should also show greater commitment to improving the economy the country and pay more attention to the eradication of this threat and piracy not only "lip service."

Remember, what goes around comes around, it might be you or your loved one morning, so everyone join in the fight against piracy.
