Music Industry Sales Chart

UK music charts – good or bad?
Originally, although there were several sources for the Top Ten,
the New Musical Express and the BBC were accepted as the
‘authorities’ on the charts.
The rules changed lately to include not only sales of records,
but downloads. Hence someone could get in the charts by
giving their music away on the internet, yet not sell a single
record.
Good luck, I say, and an advancement for the musical industry.
But are these figures realistic? Bearing in mind that one person
buys a record and offers it on Frostwire or Limewire, and it can be
downloaded by thousands of people……are todays charts of
any significance
You raise a really interesting point. I don’t take much notice of the charts now; when Top of the Pops was on it seemed relevant. Today we have so many different charts (just look at the music channels, each having their own chart), that there doesn’t seem to be the same significance. I remember (and I hope I’m not that old) when the Sunday countdown used to be a big event. I can’t say whether the charts are good or bad, just not as relevant. Interesting question!
