Flash Rodriguez, CEO and President of record label, The FEAM Group (a joint venture with Icon Records / Universal Music Group), is a music industry veteran with extensive knowledge in artist development and as an Artist and Repertoire Consultant to some of the top record labels. We asked for his expert advice on what it would take to get a job in the music industry, or at a record label. The following was his response;
“I guess I should start all my answers with this. This is the Flash Rodriguez way to get a job at a record label.” Flash laughed and continued, “If you don’t know anyone in the industry who can walk you in for an interview, then you have to work with your resources. Do you know where the record label is located? If you 3don’t, look it up. If you do, here is an idea that even worked for me.
Wait outside or inside the building, where the label is located. Simply ask people who are leaving, if they work at the label. This can be frustrating but productive. Eventually that one nice employee will either take you up to the office, or give you a phone number. I followed this formula at Bad Boy Records in 2002. After sitting outside for two weeks, Bad Boy’s Director of Promotions, Shawn Prez, gave me a chance. He gave me an interview and I began working for him, as an intern, that same day. That short two weeks has led to an eight-year career in the music industry. The knowledge I gained at Bad Boy Records from Diddy, Mel Smith (Sr. VP of Radio Promotions), and Shawn Prez prepared me for anything the music industry could throw at me. Bad Boy was where I was born into the music industry. As I thank Diddy, Mel Smith and Shawn Prez, you will thank the executive that believes in you and stops to give you a chance.”
