How many americans know the real India? India has the largest film and music industry in the world. India came up with numbers 0-9 and the decimal system. India has the leading information technology sector in the world and infosys is also on the rise. India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. India has a fast rising middle class, top businessmen and doctors….Thanks to the American media I am guessing people only know about poverty, the stereotypical

You are correct. We know more about the problems, as that is why the international community is pouring hundred of millions of US dollars in aid to India every year.
I have access to the Indian media, the type of entertainment is not “user friendly” to most westerners, so it doesn’t get much exposure in western countries.
The United States has so many Indian doctors, especially in HMOs, that we sometimes think all doctors are Indian. So we are aware that Indians are friendly and intelligent from our exposure to doctors.
The fact remains that India not still not particularly tourist friendly as it has so many continuing problems. The food isn’t generally available up to the standards which Westerners demand. Judging by the hotel prices online, western quality hotels ARE expensive and the others we are afraid of because of the horror stories on travel programs, and what friends have related upon return .
India has millions living in the streets, filth, poverty, disease and death. THIS CANNOT BE OVERLOOKED because there is at the same time a striving IT industry.
I have nothing against Indians or India, I live in SE Asia a lot, but won’t spend my time in India for holiday with all the better places to visit. This is an India problem, not a western perception problem.
