Music Industry New Orleans
What colleges are there that have a good music industry program?
I stay in New Orleans and I plan on leaving for college but I don’t know where to go. I want to major in Music Industry/music production. what schools are there that have a good music INDUSTRY program I can go to. preferably somewhere in new york/Atlanta/Los Angeles/ Chicago. but any school helps. please and thanks
i would suggest not going to school and majoring in anything music industry related. the music business is more about who you know, and what you can do. no one really cares where you went to school.
i would suggest that you decide what specifically you want to do within the music industry and then go from there. if you want to work at a record label, start contacting labels and trying to get an internship. usually when you get out of school you have to go find an internship as well. if you can get it without having to pay money to go to school than you have saved yourself quite a bit of money.
there aren’t a lot of jobs opening in the music industry. its becoming smaller and smaller every day. record labels are seeing a loss in revenue because of downloading, studios are seeing a loss in profits because of the ability to record at home for cheaper. all around the money isn’t being spread out. most of the money is in the big record companies pushing talentless idiots like justin beaner to ignorant little girls. personally, i don’t want any part of that, but feel free, its your life.
i’d contact people in the direct field that you want to go into and see how they got their jobs, and get their advice for you. most people around the industry wont give a crap about where you went to school as long as you can do the job they need you to do. get any kind of experience you can. if you want to work at live shows, get with some local bands and help them out at their shows. experience goes a long way. i would rather take someone that has been around the studio working with bands than some random kid out of school that thinks he/she knows what they are doing.
my personal advice, i would find somewhere to intern at while you go to school. major in something you can fall back on (no one can promise a career in the music business). take classes in business and communications because those will help in the music industry. also take any music related classes including music business or entertainment law. this way you can gain experience through your internship (which may even get you college credit) and you can still get an education. constantly network with people to open up more opportunities.
also remember that you may land a job in the music industry, but the chances that you will make good money right away are pretty slim.
