Music Industry Lesson Plan

Advice for an aspiring musician?
Okay to clarify i plan on majoring in mechanical engineering when i get into MTSU.But i also have this extreme love of music,( mainly the way songs can just put things into perspective or make you dream bigger, and that’s something i would truly love to be able to create myself, and do for other what music has done for me) but i also have a complete lack of direction or focus.
So i was wondering if anyone who has experience in the music industry might have some advice for an aspiring musician?
P.S I plan on taking whatever type of instrumental lessons i can get my hands on in college but I am not exactly sure on how to go about training my voice, that’s the real kicker to my problem.
You know how in business they always tell you the 3 most important things to running a successful business is “location, location, location”?
Well, here, it’s the same concept. However, it’s “practice, practice, practice”. Sing to the radio, sing with your guitar or piano… whatever instrument you may posses. Sing alone. Sing until you sound better than you started and then sing some more. Tape yourself singing and play it back. You will initially hate how your voice sounds because you no longer hear it how you always have. The vibrations in your bones actually alters the sound of your own voice when you speak. However, you will get used to the actual sound of your voice sooner or later. By this you can more easily determine if you are flat, sharp, or right on.
Then practice your instrument. Any free minute you have. Diligence and patience will pay off.
I have a love for music myself and own a Yamaha acoustic F325 guitar. I have been playing a year and a half and am 17. When I first got my guitar, I played for 5 – 7 hours straight right on through the blistering pain. Literally. I kept playing even though the one or two songs I knew were getting so monotonous that I was getting a headache. It paid off.
Best of luck! You’re on a rewarding path. Just remember my three words of advise. “Practice, practice, practice”.
