Music Industry Experience
Starting a career in the music industry?
I’ve just turned 18, finished an art course in college(with not particularly great results). I’ve wanted to work in the music industry for sometime, but I know that working as professional singer or musician would be very difficult -I play guitar, and I write songs, but I’ve played them to anyone, and I’m quite happy with that at this stage of my life.
However, the music industry is much wider than the successful faces you find on MTV. Can anyone advise me as to what kind of jobs are available to someone new to the industry, with very little experience? If I were to gain experience over the years, or even training, what are my opportunities further along the line?
the music industry is about experience and who you know. i’d try getting a foot in the door at a record label or a recording studio as an intern a few days a week. meet some people, and build some contacts, then try to go from there. there aren’t a lot of entry level positions that i’ve seen.
look at places like studios, labels, publishers, promotions, merchandise, marketing, live venues, live sound companies just to name a few.
a lot will depend on where you are located. someone in the middle of south dakota will have less opportunities than someone in LA.
