Music Industry Classes
Anyone work in the music industry?
I have to write a paper in my College Marketing class and I need a little help. What are some marketing based positions one could do in the music industry. Like Music Marketing?? What do they do?? Paper due soon, please help!
Hey there, Good Question. Record companies and concert promoters often have dedicated marketing people to help get their music and shows noticed by the desired group of people (fans or potential fans). A record company often employs different types of marketing positions including tour marketing executives, online marketing executives and people called product managers. A tour marketing executive will make sure that signage arrives at the venue before a group does and that snipes (posters) have gone up in the market as well as arranging artists to show up and perform / sign autographs at locations where potential fans would be- all to get more people out to the shows. Online marketing is more broad but these people make sure traffic is flowing to a musician’s webpage and their music and tour dates are being circulated where potential fans can find them.
Product managers at labels are in charge of the entire marketing efforts of a group from before their album is released through as many releases as the artist puts out and sometimes beyond for greatest hits etc. A product manager acts a cohesive connection between the A&R department, touring departments, new media departments, publicity departments and radio promotion departments to make sure that an artist’s image is being maintained and that the artist is always moving in the right direction gaining more fans, selling more records and concert tickets and merch etc…
Concert promoters have marketing departments that do similar tasks for venues or a series of venues – making sure people know what shows are coming up and often figuring out tie-ins (and this part goes for product managers at record companies too) with related businesses (music retailers, cellular phone companies, social networks) whereby the venue gets more people buying tickets and / or spending money at the bar and the participating tie-in company gets more exposure or people to sign up for their mailing list or web traffic etc etc…
Tickets and record sales are now both sought by record companies as many of the larger companies are signing artists to what they call 360 deals where the label participates in all revenue streams of the artist. But that’s a whole different questions.
