Getting a record deal?
Ok, I’m almost 16 years old (I’m originally from Brazil but I moved to the US for almost 4yrs) and have a love for music.
I pretty sure that I want a career in the music industry,I want to sing. I play the guitar and now I am about to take singing lessons, I was wondering how to get started so I would be discovered, should I start playing gigs around the Phoenix Area(where I live), record a demo or both?

Why do you need to be discovered? You can make a living writing and singing your own songs without any need for a record company. Plus you keep all the money and make all the decisions. Why do you think so many bands are starting their own record companies and leaving the big labels?
Start playing gigs in your own town, you’ll have to play some covers at first, but write your own material and start performing that too. When you have enough original material, with a good computer and software you can record your own music and make your own CD’s. Online companies like CD Baby can sell your CD online, and distribute it to iTunes, yahoo music etc. Jonathan Coulton is a musician in New York who’s making $3-5000 a month selling his music online.
If your business plan is dependent on someone discovering you, it’s probably doomed. How many people tried out for American Idol in each city? 10,000 multiply that by 10 cities. That’s how many people are waiting to be discovered like you. That’s not to discourage you, it’s just to point out that they are waiting for someone to make them a star. Don’t wait, take you musical career into your own hands. Sounds like you have the right idea with gigging and recording.
