Limewire, and I’m being sued..Any Lawyers/ Computer Nerds out there that can help me out??

Okay so my dad just got a letter in the mail today from Time Warner Cable and RIAA (recording industry association of america) saying that we are being SUED for illegalling downloading music. I really need some help on this, I’m 19 and my brother is 18, and we are the ones who have LimeWire. I always thought LimeWire was safe to use. I guess Time Warner is working with RIAA, they looked up our IP adress and saw that we had music on our computers I suppose. I dont really know how it all works, but I think it’s random how they do this. So my question is HOW can I get out of this without having to pay rediculous fines? I dont have the money, and I dont want my dad to have to pay the fine. I honestly didn’t know I was doing anything wrong, if you ask me, I tihnk its an invasion of privacy that they can even see into your computer use…. Help me out, thanks
I just want answers that can give me some hope of help, thats all..

Okay, here is the deal. when you installed limewire (or your brother) there is a part where there is all this written text and it says to read it and click agree before you can install the program. Like 99% of the people out there, you (or your brother) did not read it. But in there it states that you cannot use the program to download copyrighted material and that doing so is illegal. And that they have to legally report any such activity. Long story short, by clicking “okay” you agreed to them spying on your computer. It’s a file sharing program. By its definition it allows others to see into your computer.

Honestly, all that you can do is try to talk to them and tell them that you will DELETE ALL THE ILLEGAL MUSIC ON YOUR COMPUTER. But I would consult a lawyer. They will be able to help you.

Downloading music from the internet is LEGALY the same as going to the mall and shoplifting. Although it’s easy to find a program, install it and download songs, it doesn’t make it legal. The only places where you can download legal songs are places like iTunes where they charge you per song. People think that because they are at home no one can see them or what they do but that could not be farther from the truth. the record industry is trying to get the word out that if they find you, they will make you pay and hoping that as they find more people, less and less of them will download music illegally. Unfortunately, you are one of those people. I hope things work out for you. And I would not try to download anything else… you are now on their list and are probably tracking to see if you are still doing so.
