If you’re looking to download free music over the Internet to play on your iPod, Zune, computer or other music player then you are in luck. There are many options available to you with various advantages and disadvantages. These include P2P (peer to peer) systems, social music networks and public domain music.
First there is Limewire which is a program you download and install on your computer. It uses a P2P (peer to peer) network that let’s you share mp3 music files with everyone else who uses the software. The major plus is that Limewire is easy to use and the basic edition is free. However, on the down side, many people report getting computer viruses when using it.
Then there are social networks like IMEEM and Myspace which have many band and artists that give users permission to download their music for free. The great thing is that these are not all unknown bands. Many record labels occasionally provide a free mp3 download as a sample to promote a CD. However, if you want a specific song from an artist you heard on the radio, you most likely won’t find it available.
If you have an open mind and you’re into discovering new music then you can also explore public domain downloads. Simply type “public domain music” into Google and you’ll have practically an unlimited supply of free music. If you like a specific genre then search for “public domain rock music”, “public domain jazz music” or whatever your preference is. Just like the social networks you won’t find all the latest pop tunes, but if you like jazz, blues or choral music then you will be amazed with the selection.
