how would I transfer music from a vinyl record to a cd?

my dad has a bunch of old records that he has collected but he can’t listen to them because he record player broke so for Christmas as a surprise I was going to try and transfer them all to cds so he could put them on his ipod or play them in his car. I get the basics of how to do it but it’s kinda confusing me. Do I need a turntable to do this or can any record player work? If I can use a record player, what kind of plug does it need to have for it to be able to plug into my laptop? My computer has a cd burner, that much I know but I’m not sure what kind of sound card it has if it has one at all. What kind of cable do I need to connect the record player to my laptop and I heard I would need some sort of pre-amp too but is this true? And lastly what type of computer program is good for recording music like this and converting it to mp3 format? Thanks for any help you guys can give me, I really appreciate it.

If you start out with a crappy record player especially if it has a crappy needle then theres no point in doing what you want to do. They won’t be worth listening to afterwards.

You need a turntable (belt drive is you can fine it) and a preamp of some kind. You might find a turntable with a preamp built in. If it has a LINE OUT then your good. That is the kind of signal you computer will be able to record. Without the preamp, the signal is very low – like a microphone signal but tonally different. So you can’t usually just go diretly from the turntable to a mic input (even if your laptop should have one). It may work but will probably sound awful.

Then there are different kinds of preamps for different kinds of needles. So make sure you get the same type: Magnetic or ceramic are the two types.

There is a free audio program which is pretty good and might work very well for this. Its called Audacity. It will allow you to record from whatever audio imputs your laptop may have assuming it does.

You should consider searching around to see if any of these records are already available on CD. And/Or paying a professional to do the transfer for you. I’d probably charge about $10 per record to do this so that’s why I say it may be cheaper to hire someone who already has the equipment to do it for you rather than doing it yourself.
