Mp3 Music Amplifier
I need help finding out what amplifier to use for my subwoofers?
I barely know anything about speakers but in my room i’ve got two subs with
Impedance: 6 Ohms
Input: 160 W (MUSIC), 80 W (DIN)
I’ve got no idea what this means and my hi-fi doesn’t work properly so i’d like an amp with an mp3 socket and a USB port preferably. However, I have no idea what output power, input power, input sensitivity, input impedance or frequency response to look for as I don’t know what anything means.
I put this in the cars and transportation category because people with amps in their cars probably know whats best even though my speakers are inside.
Please help.
Well, are we talking about “subwoofers” or a pair of car speakers with a 2 or 3-way setup, here? or are they home speakers in boxes?
In simpler terms, subwoofer is a term for a single speaker designed to respond to only very low-frequency bass notes. (Drumbeats, low bass, etc.) Subwoofers must be used in conjunction with other speakers that handle the middle and upper frequency ranges. That’s why in many home systems you’ll have just one subwoofer, and 2 or 4 (or more for surround systems) other speakers with one or two speaker elements each in them – one for midrange and one for high frequency sound.
A 2-way or 3-way home speaker has a 2 or 3 speaker elements in each box. (A woofer, a midrange and a tweeter for low-medium and high frequency ranges) Car speakers usually “stack” these speakers on top of one another. (Woofer behind and tweeter or midrange and tweeter on top)
ANYWAYS, to drive a pair of speakers rated at 160W “Music power” you need an amplifier that is rated at about 20-30 watts per channel, RMS. Don’t worry about that 6 ohms rating much, it won’t make big difference for your purposes. Any more power than that and you’ll likely be overdriving those speakers when you turn it up. (Music power is a very misleading term.)
Music power = 2x peak power, which = about 2x the real “RMS” power so;
160/2 = 80
80/2 = 40-ish “real” power handling capability. I put “RMS” in quotes, becasue this isn’t exactly how it works, amnd RMS is an often misused and misunderstood term, as well…
A reasonable quality 20-30 watt “RMS” amplifier easily provides LOTS of room-filling volume…more than you’d be able to comfortably handle, likely.
