Who remembers when MTV played music?

On my way home from school Friday, I was explaining to my friend (the one who never listens to rock music) that MTV not only once played music, but actually had cool, groundbreaking shows and played a huge role in the explosion of rap and hip hop in the early eighties.

Who remembers the days when MTV wasn’t full of reality shows?

What were your favorite shows on MTV from the “early days?”

Who was your favorite MTV VJ?

What was your favorite video from the early days of MTV?
You know, MTV had a show called Yo! MTV Raps! which is where a ton of rap artists got their start.
Remember the game show, Remote Control? That was from the early days of MTV. JJ Jackson was good. I had a crush on Alan Hunter. There I admit it.
The hot lady was Nina Blackwood Jake.

Stupid Yahoo!

I totally remember that. You know whats funny. I remember the first video I saw on MTV. I was chanel surfing and came across the Cars “Since Your Gone.” After the video ended, JJ Jackson came on and said Thank You for watching MTV. I was so excited that we FINALLY got MTV. My mom was not so happy. She thought we’d have to pay for it and was gonna cancel it =( but never did=)

I had a huge crush on Nina Blackwood and Martha Quinn…the MTV version of Ginger and Mary ann.

Headbangers ball was definately my favorite show. Not the one with Mark Curry (or what ever his name was ) but with Rikki Rachtman.

Do you remember the 5 ORIGINAL DJs.
Martha Quinn
Nina Blackwood
JJ Jackson
Alan Hunter
Mark Goodman

Typically, we’re better off ignoring the boasts of a rapper who claims to describe his own music, but when the Roots’ lead voice Black Thought opens up his group’s debut album by saying, “You are all about to witness some organic hip-hop jazz,” it’s a good idea to listen up. Organic is a fitting adjective for a hip-hop crew whose m.o. is as different from the typical studio-locked DJ/MC combo as g…
