How to Start A Hip Hop Record Label in Easy Steps Part 2 – Getting Set Up
In part one of this series, we discussed the legal aspect of starting your own hip hop recording label. In this section of the series, we will go into the equipment you will need to get set up . So let’s get right into it and pick up where we left off at step three.
Step 3 - Buy The Toys
This is the fun part of creating your own hip hop recording label. Your basic recording studio equipment can easily be a laptop computer with appropriate software and hardware configurations, a few microphones, an amp and the wiring to connect the assembly together. For starting hip hop record labels, this minimalist approach is highly recommended especially since this particular setup is highly portable so you can record on the go. As you see what works, add new equipment to your existing tools.
Computer - The computer should be a key element of any hip hop recording studios equipment. Why? Because it will make your life so much easier. The world of music has gone into the digital age and using a computer to record your music will make it much easier to keep up with the pace. Since your recordings will already be on the computers hard disk, editing and sharing them will be much easier. Storage for reels of tapes is no longer a problem because all of your recordings will fit inside the same space occupied by your computer.
Since the computer is such an important part of your recording equipment there are a few things you will want to look for when you purchase this equipment. You will want the largest hard drive you can afford, a good processor and as much memory or RAM as your budget will allow. 1 Gigabyte of RAM is the lowest recommended amount of memory for a computer used in recording. You also need to be sure your sound card has a jack for plugging in a microphone or line in as this will be your method of getting the music from your amp into your computer. A laptop is highly recommended for portability but a desktop system will work perfectly if you plan on doing all of your recording in the studio.
Microphone – This piece of equipment is vital to your set up because it translates your music into the digital signal of the computer. Pick the best quality microphone that your budget will allow.
Amplifier – Providing the power for your microphone, the amplifier is another necessary part of your equipment. It doesn’t have to be a high dollar amp but make sure it has the correct plug ins for your microphone and a set of RCA outputs or a line out jack so you can connect it to your computer.
This basic equipment and the wiring to connect it is all you need to make your first recordings as a brand new hip hop label. In three easy steps, you have founded your hip hop recording label empire.

Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste $29.99 No judgement of taste is innocent. In a word, we are all snobs. Pierre Bourdieu brilliantly illuminates this situation of the middle class in the modern world. France’s leading sociologist focusses here on the French bourgeoisie, its tastes and preferences. Distinction is at once a vast ethnography of contemporary France and a dissection of the bourgeois mind. In the course of everyday life peop… |
