Hip Hop Rap Difference
What is the essential difference between hip hop and rap?
For instance, I know the distinction between metal and hard rock, or swing and jazz. No one can give me a clear answer on this one, though. Is there a clear answer after all?
bob reads these answer and gets the impression these people dont know hip hop, only been with hip hop for a couple years or are completly oblivous about the culture.
first of all there is kind of two answers to this, there is a REAL answer which is true to the hip hop culture and been here since hip hop was born some 30 years ago and then there is a new FAKE pop culture answer that was made because of the recent raping and defiling of hip hop that the pop culture has commited.
Let bob start with the first one, the real answer to this is hip hop music and rap music are the same.
Hip hop is the culture made up of
Mcing (rapping)
Djing (bobs assuming you know what this is)
Breaking (Break dancing)
Urban Inspired Art (Graffiti)
now hip hop music is the Mcing and Djing part of the hip hop culture. It was shortned and sometimes called rap because mcing is rapping therefor the product of rapping is rap.
The legendary KRS-One has once said “Hip hop is the way of life and rapping is what you do” Which sums it all up.
So back in the day some people would call it rap, because the rappers were rapping and some would call it hip hop, but no one ever argued or even suggested they were two different things.
Now bob is going to tell you the second answer, which is not really an answer but an explaination to why the media and people have began saying hip hop music and rap music are two different geners or things or what ever the fuck they saying now.
Recently the media and white kids who dont know much about hip hop, note some of the answers above, have began starting up shit and saying hip hop and rap are two different things music wise, remember majority of these kids dont even know theres a hip hop culture or anything about it.
This is because because of the deteriation of mainstream hip hop and the poor quality of most rappers recent work some artist such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Mos Def and a lot of Underground Artist that people would consider “good quality” hip hop artist have begun calling themselves Hip hop artist instead of rappers and their work Hip Hop isntead of rap. This is mostly because those artist tend to look down upon the more “pop” artist whos work is not as good as it should be such as Lil wayne, Diddy, 50 Cent and so on.
This however has caused the media and everyone to be confused and all hell to break lose.
For example Wu-Tang considers themselves Hip hop because well they look down upon and laugh at modern mainstream artist, while the game considers himself a rapper because he belives gangsta rap is made by rappers, while at the same time the late Tupac Shakur who used to do Gangsta rap as well is classifyed by “rap&hip hop” by the media, but then the Notorious B.I.G who did a popish gangsta rap is considered hip hop. So now you got 20 people over here who have all different styles and qualitys of music being called hip hop artist by the media, themselves and the kids, while 20 others as rappers and and 20 others being called 20 different things.
The best way to get through this orgy of confusion and dumbasses, just stick to the old school explination, hip hop is the culture, rap is the music of the culture and they are all rappers, although some rappers music is of lower quality then others.
CJ got the general idea of hip hop, however R&B is not part of the hip hop culture, R&B has been around before hip hop and hip hop music was influenced by R&B. Artist such as Akon are R&B artist not rappers.
