Summer festivals in the Windy City

Chicago is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the USA. In fact, O’Hare International Airport is the second busiest airport in the world. Travelers come from all over to experience the architecture, industry and culture of Chicago and what better way to enjoy a vacation in the Windy City than to attend one of its many summer festivals?

For music lovers there is the Chicago Blues Festival, which stages some of the worlds best blues musicians. Held over four days in early June, previous performers include B.B. King and Chuck Berry. Pitchfork Music Festival hosts alternative rock, hip-hop and electro among others over three days, usually in July. Broken Social Scene and Modest Mouse featured as two of the headliners in this year’s line-up. Lollapalooza, which normally takes place in August, is suited for fans of metal, punk, rock and hip-hop. Metallica, Snoop Dogg and Lou Reed are some names to have graced the festival in the past.

Foodies won’t know what hit them, should they visit the Taste of Chicago, the biggest food festival in the world. Held over ten days in July, it is the biggest summer festival in Chicago attracting over three million visitors annually. It includes over 70 food vendors, many selling popular local dishes such as Chicago style pizza and hot-dogs, as well as stages for live music.

Another big Chicago summer festival is the Chicago Pride festival. This is usually held on the fourth weekend of July. It is a chance for the LGBT scenes of Chicago to come together and celebrate with a colorful parade, live music and food. Lively and loud, festival goers take to the streets in crazy costumes and party late into the night.

Art fans will be dazzled by the selection on display at the 57th Street Art Fair, named after the street it takes place on. This historical art festival runs during the first full weekend of June and is Chicago’s oldest juried art fair. Over 250 artists come to showcase original pieces to around 20,000 visitors.

The above festivals are only a taste of the summer fun on offer in Chicago, hundreds more take place annually including festivals for kids and numerous heritage celebrations such as the Irish-American, Polish-American and German-American festivals to name but a few. Whatever you are in the mood to celebrate, there is almost certainly a festival in Chicago for you.
