Hip Hop Keyboard Riffs

Is Jaco Pastorius still important and/or relevant to modern music?

Seems like technical and virtuoso playing styles have taken a backseat to making catchy riffs and beats. Repetition and looping seems like it makes more sense. I know many Hip Hop albums were made with bass samples from a keyboard rather than a real bass.

Actually, catchy riffs and beats have always been a mainstay of pop music, and virtuoso playing never really has. At the same time, Jaco has always been a mainstay of jazz music, even after his passing.

So the “answer,” if there is just one, is how you define “modern music.” If you’re talking about pop, Jaco’s influence has been felt there, and is still felt in the bass playing of bands like Tower of Power, but “horn bands” like Tower are no longer the favorite sound of the pop music industry, and virtuoso playing (like that of the guitar legends of the 60s – 80s) is also not really the ‘current’ sound.

But if you’re talking about jazz, Jaco is as relevant as ever. Every important bassist in jazz recognizes Jaco’s contribution to their art and their craft, even if they haven’t actually borrowed from him stylistically or technically (but a great many of them have; Victor Wooten is an example of a player whose style shows Jaco’s influence.) Legions of young jazz bassists study Jaco’s playing. His music still sells, and he still has a vital fan base.
