Could a song track from a mix tape be stolen?
A friend of mine is an up and coming Hip-Hop/Rap recording artist and asked me to promote his music. He is currently narrowing his search for a legitimate manager. Until that point, we have both been wondering about the legal security of distributing some of his music locally on mix CD’s. If we did this before anything is copyright protected, could his tracks be copyrighted by others? If so, could they claim ownership of the lyrics themselves too or only the beats/instrumentals?
The only thing you have to worry about is the instrumental rights…if they’re free downloads from soundclick etc then it will be illegal for you to make profit from them. Free downloads are for promotional purposes only (promotes the producer) and it can not be used for you to profit.
