Can hip hop revitalize boxing in America?

KO Magazine Feb. 2006 question revisited…

Hip hop is in everything today. I think a younger generation of boxers and boxing fans would be drawn if boxing modernized and urbanized it’s image…and promoted those who were truly hip hop guys. Wrestling has done it and it worked. …any thoughts?
Ita;ian hip hop isnt just a black thing its a generational thing. It’s #1 consumer, purchaser isn’t blacks it’s whites. Hip was started by blacks and hispanics and is loved everywhere around the world now. You can find japanese hip hop…

I think promoting Black fighters to a Hip Hop audience can only help boxing. I always see Fighters like Bernard Hopkins,Winky Wright,Zab Judah,Floyd Mayweather in Rap Videos and at The BET awards. Its good because it familiarizes black Fans with certain Boxers regardless of if there fight fans or not, that intern can make them fight fans.

The thing with having a Fighter is you have too understand who your promoting them to. For example Latin Fury Cards are geared towards Mexican fight fans that helps build a fan base with fighters. One thing about a lot of Black Fighters guys like Shane Mosley and Paul Williams is there extremely skilled however they don’t have a large fan base because there not being promoted to anybody. You would always see Italian American fighters like Rocky Marciano with other Italian Sports figures like Joe DiMaggio. I guess the modern equivalent is Floyd Mayweather hanging out with 50 Cent on 24/7 or Zab Judah in a Lil Kim Video or Winky Wright in a Jamie Foxx Video it may sound corny but it helps build fans that might not be fight fans and that’s what sell PPV the Casual Fight Fans.
