Marketing Your Music

Time after time I meet unsigned artist that fantasize of becoming the next hip hop sensation or icon. The ones I normally meet usually have the slightest clue about the business side of music.

When I am approached by an artist, they normally ask what should they do to get that buzz going, and I would give a simple and straight forward answer, and it would fly right over some of their heads. Then some take the answer and run with it, and become success in creating the buzz.

My first answer would be invested in yourself and your brand. I don’t mean go out and spend hundreds of dollars on sneakers and clothes to make a video or do promotions. What I mean is start with a simple plan. (I’m assuming your music is on CD and Online). Then start promoting your music in your home town.  Your job is to place flyers and promotional materials in retail outlets, perform at local venues, etc. Just to start.

Invest in yourself, this means invest $150 for 5000 4×6 full color flyers, which have 2 sides. One side can include album art & the single you’re promoting, and other information on the other side of the flyers, just be very creative.

And if you already submitted (service) your music to local radio stations, don’t forget to include “request our song” at wxxx radio stations with phone number and other contact information on your flyers.

Another good idea is, since everything is going digital, your CD’s can be used as a promotional tool. My advice is turning your CDs into an enhanced CD Rom that has the capability to play in a CD player, and when you place it in a computer CD drive, a screen opens up with whatever options you designed it to do. This means you can include videos, graphics, screen savers, etc. You have to remember space will be limited. Due to your music is also place on the CD Rom. This also applies to DVDs as well.

If your not taking full advantage of the many free resources available online. Then you are going to miss out. There are so many opportunities available out there for musicians. Now I am not saying sign up with every website that offers a service. It is up to you to you seek legal advice from an attorney before you get into any business venture. So please stay focus. Until the next time…
