Hip Hop Early 2011

Do you think Detox & R.E.D. will bring back West Coast hip hop?
I personally think that it will, I have recently watched Dre’s I Need A Doctor video and the plot depicts Dre from his early career, to a car crash, to a recovery.
I think it represents how he started, how he lost his touch, and how he is coming back.
Also he then goes to Eazy’s grave at the end..
I think he is working on making his last album a West Coast classic, I think it will have G-Funk too.
Also, Warren G is making a Regulate: G-Funk Era 2 album, and that shit might just be a classic…
AND Game is making his final album, R.E.D.
The West has been dead since Pac, after 1996 the West Coast era just died.
Same with East Coast, as it started rap, then West took over, then East came back in 1993-1997.
And after that, the South took over from 1999-2011..
I don’t know anything about The Game, was never really interested in him so I can’t comment on that.
But no, I don’t think it’s going to happen this year, at least not with Dre and Warren G. What made the West the West wasn’t just that it was the left coast, but the overall sound was different than the sound coming out of other areas of the country. Lots of West Coast artists latched on to that sound and mimicked it and that’s what really made the Westcoast it’s own subgenre and kept it going for all those years. From what I’ve heard so far, Detox doesn’t sound like anything different than the current mainstream sound that most artists are doing. If there was any hope of it resurrecting the West, it would have to be a brand new sound that separated it from the current mainstream sound. Something for the West, and only the West, to identify with. Exclusivity.
As far as Warren G, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. I like most of his albums, but I remember when “The Return of the Regulator” was announced as his next album about 10 years ago. I was so hyped up and thought it was going to boost the West up like the first Regulate album. I loved the album but it wasn’t on that level as far as impact and it was a bit disappointing. I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were you. The title may sound like it’s going to make a big splash but it will probably be more like a little ripple.

Eminem: Crossing the Line $10.95 “God sent me to piss the world off,” Eminem boasts on his breakthrough hit “My Name Is.” A grandiose claim to be sure, but it’s hard to imagine another rapper generating as much controversy and outrage as this bleach-blonde Detroit MC outlaw while still selling millions of records and becoming a hero to pop fans and hardcore hip-hop purists alike. The sharp-tongued product of crushing poverty and … |
