WHAT DOES A ROCK PRODUCER DO?????

like i hear about bands working with these famous producers………do they help the singer write the song and help the guitarists/drummer write there parts too?????????????

Cuz i know a hip hop producer makes the beat for the song that the rapper raps on an some even make there own because its like i one man show….but bands have members that play instruments

If they do write it for them or help alot doesnt that defeat the purpose….that means anyone who knows how to play an instrument can get a record deal

Generally a producer will be the “overseer” for an album project. They work closely with the recording engineer as well as the artists in an attempt to make the final product sound the best.

The producer is usually “put in charge” of how the overall sound is going to be, so yes – they’ll tell the engineer “let’s record that guitar part again, but this time move the microphone over >there< so we can get a different sound". The band will also often take feedback from the producer, whether it's a small change to a vocal melody, re-arranging parts of songs, suggesting different guitar & keyboard sounds, perhaps changing a lyric, etc. The idea is that the band (or record label) has hired this producer for a good reason, so the band will typically have some respect for and be open to suggestions from the producer to make a better overall product. Creative people being creative people, (and in the music biz, often having gigantic egos) this isn't always a smooth process.

Probably one of the best examples if you wanted to look into it further - check out the involvement of Mutt Lange with Def Leppard when they did the Pyromania album. Great story, and you can thank the incredible success of that album in a VERY large part to the direction of Mutt...

Maybe even more historic than that, however, would be the involvement of George Martin and the Beatles.

I'm sure if you popped over to wikipedia.org and put in either/both of those producer's names, you'd be lead to a better understanding of their roles and how they helped shape the bands recordings.
