Music Downloads Rocking the World In 2010

With access to music being faster and easier than ever before thanks to the MP3 revolution, keeping ahead of the latest trends sweeping the musical world is more fast-paced and exciting than ever. With emerging genres and favourites from the past resurfacing for a brief resurgence, 2010 has thus far been an electrifying year for music, and with the summer festival season now in full swing, this momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Music may be a universal phenomenon, but that doesn’t stop certain styles failing to cross the cultural barrier. Dance music may be big business in Europe, with destinations such as Ibiza being popular getaways for ravers each summer, but the phenomenon never really took hold in the trend-setting USA – until producer David Guetta collaborated with some of the country’s top pop acts to bring his hypnotic beats and melodic chord progressions to a new audience.

The Guetta-produced ‘Sexy Bitch’, recorded with Akon, reached number five in the US charts, while the even bigger hit ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’, one of the tracks he produced for the Black Eyed Peas, recently became the biggest selling digital download of all time. More than 5.5 million people downloaded the hit song, demonstrating the ever-growing power of the digital music industry where downloads rule the airwaves.

Music downloads are such big business that top producers and artists are able to rely on the medium exclusively, in lieu of releasing a costly physical CD. English rock band Radiohead made music history when they released their 2007 album In Rainbows exclusively through online mediums, at least at first. More recently, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor offered his new project to fans over the internet, produced in collaboration with his wife Mariqueen Maandig under the name How to Destroy Angels.

The summer is traditionally a huge time for music downloads, as fans flock to fields around the world to catch their favourite live artists on stage, usually supported by lesser-known acts that will soon see their albums rise in the digital charts as a growing following develops. Although music channels and radio airplay are still common ways for listeners to discover new music, the internet is becoming increasingly significant in raising awareness of the latest sounds.

With music downloads now firmly established as a standardised part of life, traditionalists who bemoan the departure from traditional music mediums are increasingly seeing the advantages of near-instantaneous downloads, and music services allowing users to sample songs before buying them and potentially making an expensive mistake.
