Can Hip Hop tell Christ’s story and make you dance? Pryme Minister thinks so

Pryme Minister & his Army of the Lord

by Takuan Amaru

We are living in some serious times…drastic times requires drastic measures! I’m a firm believer in biblical prophecy and I think we are seeing the fulfillment of it literally…”

…I’m not trying to change the world…just want to change your mind. Take life more serious, take heed to the Word of God…”

–Pryme Minister

Most people are probably more likely to associate words like these with a religious or political figure rather than an up-and-coming hip hop artist. If we take a closer look at the hottest, new voice to bless the mike, his uncompromising stance in his spiritual expression, more than anything else, is what distinguishes him from Nas, Kanye, 50 cent or any other rappers that may come to mind.

Like Pryme, these artists tell a side of the African-American experience. Nas and Fiddy are famous for their witty, street vernacular filled hooks situated between clever, lyrical tales from the ghetto. Kanye is somehow able to mix a bit of the gangsta ethos with his own nerdy persona to make music that is soulful and fun for the mainstream.

Although there may be similarities to these and other artists, Pryme Minister’s ability to speak the language of the streets while dropping the uncompromised gospel, and at the same time, navigate the listener on a detailed journey through his ‘hood, sets him apart from his peers. Drugs, violence, sex…all the ills are covered, but not glorified; instead, they are told from the perspective of a “person who knows suffering” and articulated objectively from a storyteller’s point of view. He calls it “gospel truth mixed with hard fact.”

Many artists give glory to God when accepting an award, but don’t necessarily have their relationship with the Creator as a top priority? Some of these artists devote a song or even an entire album to God. An example of this trend may be Kanye West’s song, Jesus Walks, which was highly controversial in the media when it was released. In a song entitled, Just like you, Pryme mentions Kanye and his 2004 hit: if Jesus is walking with Kanye then I’m a good bet.” He basically explains that he is the real thing and invites the listener to be the judge. What does this imply about Kanye?

Again, you be the judge.

This “gospel truth mixed with hard fact” has a name; it is “Change Muzik.” This is not to be confused with Christian or Gospel hip hop, which probably has many rappers that actually “live their lyrics”…

…but how many of them have their music bumping in the ‘hood?

This is what separates Pryme Minister and his Army of the Lord from other rappers and Change Muzik from the many sub-genres contained within hip hop.

What is Change Muzik?

“There is such a break in the community between conscious and non-conscious rap, that the conscious guys feel so compelled to write lyrics that are saying something that they neglect the music side of it. In the end, if you are not getting cats’ heads nodding in their SUVs and their cars, you’re not going to reach them.”–Kevin Powell, former senior writer, Vibe magazine

Being “consciously gospel” while expressing the view of the ‘hood with tight lyrics and beats is what Change Muzik is preaching. Change Muzik is all about reaching cats and making them nod their heads.

Pryme Minister explains in a recent interview:

I’m talking to the streets, to the hood…not church folks. Most people who relate to my music have never been in church so gospel rap doesn’t impact them like “Change Muzik” does…”

Pryme Minister’s songs are not sugar-coated melodies dumbed down for a mainstream, Hollywood audience, but rather, soulful, ghetto anthems of the downtrodden embedded with the ‘good news’ of the gospel for the average person on the street.

“I feel like Noah over some dope beats telling the world “the floods coming…get in the Ark.”

When asked about what the future holds for him and Change Muzik, Pryme Minister said:

I believe Change Muzik is an unstoppable force that’s going to hit the industry harder than most people ever expected it to and its going to make a huge impact on many lives globally. If gangster rap was big when it hit then “Change Muzik” is going to be colossal. People are hungry for it! Log onto my websites and hit me up on Facebook & Twitter. Stay posted on what’s new, post your reviews, we would love to hear from you.”
