Lessons from the life of Rodolfo: Six Ways Misfits adorable can take your own "red nose" for a fuller 2009
For roffer Robin Fisher
We all know the story. We have seen the classic film again and again and had the happy song stuck in your head for days. (You're hearing now, right?) We have encouraged the bold red-nosed reindeer and his partner Hermey, the elf determined with dreams of dental school. Despite adults, we delighted in scenes of snow the North Pole, shuddered at the Abominable Snowman, and rejoiced in the happy ending to our unlikely hero. But few of us really have pondered the meaning behind this little fable: the fulfillment of life means being yourself (symbolic) nose bright red and everything.
There has never been a better time to march to the beat of the proverbial "different drummer" that makes you. And if you take a lesson from the most famous reindeer of all, you can make 2009 the year they turn their unique qualities to their advantage.
While Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was made in 1964, its subject, comprising uniqueness worth-is even more true today. In a global world where companies (and employees) face a literal world of competition, where people meet their spouses through online dating services, and where everyone, from celebrities to his uncle Fred have MySpace accounts, without fear of being yourself is the only way to distinguish from the masses.
This is how Rudolph and his friends brought their own "brave fish" to save the day when the fog on Christmas Eve, and the way in which, allegorically, at least you can do the same in 2009.
Let your nose shine. Once it became clear that Rudolph was not like the rest of his teammates, his father devised well-intentioned a way to help "fit" of mud covered the nose did not last for long, when your true self and shone through, the other reindeer immediately excluded from the reindeer games. Moreover, the range very little Clarice told her that her red nose was "much better than wearing false." The point? Playing an "acceptable" role ever, at least not work for long.
When they are not authentic, it shows. Instead of fitting, you are as dishonest and untrustworthy. Not to downplay their ethnic origin, or trying to hide the fact that you're gay, or maybe a country music fan in an office full of hip-hop listeners. Give the world a representation without fear of who you are and let the chips fall where they may. Most likely they will fall in his favor.
Do not just read his book with nostalgia dentist. Take your (metaphorical) drilling and get to work. Hermey is an elf. At the North Pole. Of course toys to do, right? Wrong! Hermey wanted to be a dentist in your place, and finally, found the initiative to pursue his dream. Taking the first step toward major changes in life, especially those who go against the grain can seem overwhelming. But as the fish without fear that we see the need for change and take a flying leap in place.
We all have dreams that we were too scared to play in our lives. Perhaps a new career, or eventually return to school. Or maybe you're living in a city that simply does not work for you. Make this the year you finally change things. You will be surprised how many other things start to fit into your life once you are allowed to pursue the things that really make you happy.
Search your own Hermey and make friends. On the surface it may seem like a red-nosed reindeer and an elf who wants to be dentist may not have all that much in common. However, it was the mantra mismatch Rudolph and Hermey pariah state that joined them and helped them become an unstoppable force. Similarly, if you are a "fish out of water", must be aligned with others who are different or special in its own way.
It is important to find others who you can count on as allies and friends in their quest for success. No, you no need to wait for a friend of a coworker who is also an immigrant from China, which is probably unrealistic. But it is possible to join forces with, for example, another rebel who tries to carry the burden of a dynamic change in the company.
Find a boss like Santa. Nobody is suggesting that you find a job in a toy store, or search for a youthful leader in a red suit. Rather, look to the leaders or influential colleagues in the vision to recognize what they bring to the table. Unlike Rudolph Santa used to make him a great leader for his team. This is the kind of person you should look for in your organization who can help to take to the top.
Look for people who are creative and open mind and get in his way. These are the people that their ideas and talents to champion the right time. Rudolph was given the opportunity to save Christmas because he had a leader who could appreciate his unique talent. If you have been fired, take this opportunity to make your next job with the kind of leadership. His timing could be right around the corner, you only need the right people to help get you there.
Help misfit toys in their own lives. Rudolph and Hermey use its alliance with others to overcome obstacles and achieve their own happy endings. It would be easy to assume that the story stops there, right? Not to fish without fear. Like Rudolph used his influence with Santa to help Toys mismatch find a happy home, we must advocate for others who need a helping hand.
Once you have begun to find their own way, using the influence has been to help others on their journey. After all, you were one of them at some point and it is important to keep the focus cycle. It is not just a nice thing to do for someone else, is a catalyst for continued growth and positive energy for you too.
Make sure will go down in history. It may seem obvious, but things that make you unique are any good to you only if you use them. It is easy to see things that make you different as what keeps you out of the group in general. In fact, they are his secret weapons. If Rudolph had not used his nose to guide the sleigh through the fog, which is still only be a person outside the community of reindeer. Instead, winds up the hero.
Being a fish out of water without fear means believe that there are just taking up space but that their contributions are valuable. The cultivation of this kind of confidence from deep inside of you drives you forward more than anything in life. So do not apologize for who you are and what makes you different. Be bold, be creative, and get out there. People who are different are often those who can make a difference.
Of course, "Be yourself" does not seem to be the kind of art councils to build a life-changing New Year's resolution about. After all, the mother of all the world has said hundreds of times. But if you are honest, admit that those two small words are hard to put into action. And that is precisely why they are so powerful.
So many people are afraid to be themselves. So when you decide to cut that rebel inside Loose, well, people notice. Paying attention. And if you've always been the "hide your light under a bushel" kind, attracting the attention may be best that happened to you. Be who you are, and like our favorite holiday hero, you will be happy too. And that is the only end to his story that matters.
